SHIMEI

He was not a pleasant person. An angry sort of guy..
His mouth was filled with curses.The name is Shimei.
He called the king a "scoundrel" and one who should not reign
And falsely claimed Saul's household David had once slain.

From high above the roadway he screamed, threw rocks and cussed;
Taunting David's entourage as he showered them with dust.
Abishai had had enough! He found the king and said,
"Why should this dead dog curse my king? Let me cut off his head!"

"Leave him alone! Let him curse...the Lord may well repay
Me with some good for this abuse that's been my lot today."
What pained the king much more than cursing, dust or stone
Was that the son he deeply loved was set to take his throne.

The son would meet a tragic death while hanging from a tree
A javelin of Joab did the deed for all to see.
They threw his body in a pit and piled rocks over him.
The troops stopped fighting Israel for Joab halted them.

Now, what's to be with Shimei? Absalom had failed.
The king would sure remember how he'd kicked and thrown and railed!
His troubles were not over. The warrior Abishai
Had once again found reason for Shimei to die.

But David, having lost his son, wanted no more blood be shed.
"You know for sure I am the king. I do not want him dead."
He really was a sorry lot,and sure deserved to die
David went the second mile in sparing Shimei.

The Son of David sees you and me as sons of Shimei.
For all our disobedience we too deserve to die.
However if we turn His way in repentance and in love,
He gives us everlasting life in heaven up above.

The Bible story of Shimei is found in II Samuel 16:5-14; 19:16-23;
