At a Baptist College in the fifties life was rather tame. The girls were locked in at 8:00, a little later on weekends, and Prayer Meeting night. The only place open in Arkadelphia, Arkansas was the Bus Station. We supplied our own entertainment. It was after ten in the evening and several guys were gathered in my room. Talk came around to dares. What would you do on a dare? One of the guys, who had some money, said, "I'll dare someone to walk to Gurdon." Gurden was down highway 67 sixteen miles! The offer was $10.00. He didn't know how badly I needed ten dollars! I said, "I'll do it!". I got the horse laughs for no one thought I would. Walk sixteen miles on a mostly deserted highway at night? Crazy! And it was. There could be no tricks. The guy with the money informed me than in Gurdon by the train station there was a monument of a woodcutter, I believe. It was called the HOO HOO MONUMENT. I was to copy the words written on the HOO HOO MONUMENT. At 11:00 PM, with a small flashlight, pencil and paper, I left the comfort of my room for the great outdoors. I won't bore you with the details of the walk except to say that is a long way, alone, after dark. The flashlight gave out somewhere along the way. I arrived at the HOO HOO MONUMENT at 5:30 AM. After copying the required words I went to the bus station close by, for coffee; caught the six-oclock bus to Arkadelphia and went to my room to sleep; missing all my morning classes. Part of my profit was spent on the bus. Missing those classes didn't help my grades. However, I did it! Among my great accomplishments in life was walking all night to the HOO HOO MONUMENT. If you happen to be traveling on I 30 between Texarkana and Little Rock get off for a moment in the little town of Gurdon; drive to the railroad station and see the HOO HOO MONUMENT. It is still there and I am still here. Who, Who would do a crazy thing like that? Me.Me! It would take more like $10,000. to do it now. Ah, for those days of youth! Is that an Owl I hear? Hoo! Hoo!
