Listen, my children, and I will tell
Of a daring woman named Jael.
But first, a lead-in to this story.
Let me warn you, it gets gory!
Jabin reigned in Hazor. In Canaan he was king
Sisera, his general, would do most anything.
For twenty years the Israelites were cruelly oppressed.
They pleaded to the Lord so they could get some rest.
God heard their plea and Deborah came forth to meet their need
With Barak and their army. The Lord was in the lead.
Sisera was routed. Every man there died,
but Sisera, their leader, who ran away to hide.
He found the tent of Heber. His clan had been a friend
of Kenites in the past. Protection they would lend!
Jael went out to meet him. "Come, my lord inside
Where you can drink and sleep, and safely here abide..
I'll stand here near the doorway, and if your foes should show
and ask if I have seen you, I'll tell them strongly, 'No!' "
She put a cover on him as he lay on the floor
Then took her place to guard him just inside the door.
Sisera, exhausted, soon fell fast asleep.
Jael crept toward him to take a final peep.
With tent peg and a hammer, she came near to his head,
The peg pierced through him to the ground. Sisera was dead.
A moral of this story, though not one told right here.
A hammer and a tent peg is something men should fear.
If camping, and the wife says, "You've got a job to do.",
and she has hammer and a peg; work until it's through!.
