Repo Man

Between military service in the fifties and attending seminary I went to Houston with a friend, Bob Highgate. After a couple of weeks I got employment with Commercial Credit as an "adjuster". I didn't know it but I would be a repo man. The first day at work the man I was replacing told me we needed to take a car back to the dealership in Pasadena. It wasn't running so he would push me with the company car. I didn't have a clue where Pasadena was. We were in the 3000 block of South Main in Houston. He told me to watch in the rear view mirror for signals to go right or left. Without the engine running I had no power steering or brakes. We started off on this venture and after several blocks he waved for me to go right. A few more blocks and he waved me left......on to the Galveston Freeway!. Have you ever driven a car with no engine and little brake on a Freeway while being pushed? No fun. It must have been fifteen miles. I am driving for my life! The car behind wasn't riding my bumper, it was touching my bumper. It would back off and then slam into me again. Finally a wave and we were off. It was still several miles to the dealership. When we got there and stopped I was shaken and angry. I had never had such a scare, not even while commanding a platoon of personnel carriers on maneuvers in Germany! I told him that if that was what the job was about I was quitting. He laughed and said, "you'll do a lot of different things". That was an understatement! My boss would get folks who were behind on a car payment on the phone if possible. He would get them angry or scared and then send me out to bring in the money or the car. If the car was there I was to get it. If they did not give me the keys I could break a window and have a buddy push the dead car around the corner and then get a wrecker. Lots of stuff like that. All the while I was dating Ann who was a nursing student in downtown Houston. There was a bright spot. If I repoed a car in the late afternoon I could keep the car until the next day. One evening I went to pick her up for a date in an almost new Chrysler convertible. We cruised Houston that night looking prosperous. My best repo was Ann. She is still parked at our house after almost fifty years. I think I will keep her.
