Competition

Competing is a way of life; at every family's table,
beginning in an ancient time with brothers Cain and Abel.
First born was quite important, the leader of a clan.
Jacob grabbed his brother's foot with his unborn hand

seeking to be the first born son; but later with the means
he'd rob poor Esau of his place with a bowl of beans.
Competing never ended. Some say it goes on still
between the families of these two, and likely always will.

Small babies vie for mother's time and seek her full attention
while brothers, sisters, and old dad get very little mention.
In school the pressure rises some, now, it is a grade.
They find it is important what someone else has made!

There's tryouts for the cheering squad and the soccer teams
and little league and solo parts and everything it seems.
It all spells competition; sometimes head-to-head.
And when one loses he or she can feel like he is dead.

When graduation finally comes, the battle's just begun
for now the world competes for you because of what you've done.
Marines or Army; Air Force!; There's the Navy too.
Colleges now can tell all they can do for you.

When one begins to seek a mate there is a big surprise
for competition levels on this field often will arise.
Credit cards and banks and such will all compete to see
If they might put you deep in debt for an eternity.

So when we look out on a field and watch two teams compete
we can lean back in our chairs and say, "That's really neat!
they're finding out what life's about, while banging on one's head."
It's all about compete, compete. Compete until you're dead!
