Political Aspirations

While my poems lie in dormancy I will reflect on some long-past adventures. This one is about my first and last time to run for an office. It was my junior year at Ouachita Baptist College in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. In a late-night bull session in one of our rooms I was persuaded to run for Student Body President! I had not been on student council. I hadn't been a class officer. To put it bluntly, I had done nothing and knew very little about what the position entailed. Joe Hubbard persuaded me to run. He would be my campaign manager. The theme for the campaign would be "I Go Pogo". The comic strip Pogo was popular then. There were three candidates. In the first election no one received a majority of votes. Melvin Thrash led. I was second and LeRoy Summers was a couple of votes behind me. I had made the run-off! I hoped to get LeRoy's votes. In the final tally I lost by thirty-one votes. I was so relieved! Now, let me tell you about the persons I have mentioned: Melvin Thrash from Hope, Arkansas (does that ring a bell?) later was elected Mayor of Hope. He also was active in Army Reserve and became head of the Arkansas Reserve and a Brigadier General. LeRoy Summers was a talented Music Minister; Administrator; and Senior Adult Minister, retiring from Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas. Joe Hubbard, my campaign manager, decided several years later to run for Governor of Arkansas. He ran against Orville Faubus, long-time governor who had fought integration at Central High School in Little Rock. Poor Joe didn't stand a chance against Faubus. Me? I retired from politics with no regrets. I still have a lot in common with some people I see running for political office. I am grossly underqualified. There will be no more political aspirations.........unless you are captivated by " I Go Pogo! ".
