This Is Family

Two-storied English Tudor with pool out in the back.
A Lexus and two Audis each a shiny black.
Terraced lawn and gardens made for folks to see,
Successful parents; fun-filled kids. This is family.

Single mother dwelling; three rooms and a bath.
Ancient dark brown shag rug with a well-worn path.
Baby barely walking. Another almost four.
Daddy couldn't take it. He walked out the door.
Needing baby's formula. Nothing out there's free.
Struggling for survival; this is family.

Ancient clap-board ranch house with chickens in the yard.
Weary, aging cowhand, all his work is hard.
Seven long-gone children left pictures you can see.
Mom is tired and crippled. This is family.

Dad is at the rest home. Mom is with their son.
Money's hard to come by; meds all cost a ton.
Pray they keep his dad there is their constant plea.
Life gets tougher day by day, but this is family.

Two young folks just married. Living on their own.
He is at his first job. She's home on her phone.
They are both excited, happy as can be.
The present is their only life. This is family.

Families are everywhere. Every shape and size.
That we are a part of one is surely no surprise.
None of them are quite alike, including you and me,
But the future of our land depends on family.
