The Great Girl's Football Game

The game was held on November 8, 1949 in Fort Smith High School Grizzly Stadium. Two teams of girls from the pep squad played each other in a full football tackle game. They wore the team's uniforms and helmets. The football team played along and wore dresses or skirts and became the pep squad, With only a few days practice these two teams took the field and they meant business! One girl, Connie Lichty, was knocked out and had to be revived. Another received a broken shoulder. There were bruises and cuts. One girl caught a pass and ran the wrong way. Following an evaluation by the Principal and others the first girl's tackle football game became the last one. It was banned to this day. My fifty cent ticket was the best money I ever paid for a sporting event. Girls participate in rugged sports these days. They didn't back then. Basketball was a stand still, no contact pass the ball sport. Soccer was on another continent. Volleyball was for the church parking lot. Things have cha....no, I am not going to say it.
