I had seen various animals from other countries inside high fences in the Hill Country. I had never been inside one until recently. It was interesting. Our daughter gave James a hunt for Christmas. It was an inexpensive one. He added some money his dad had given him and went for a more expensive trophy. I believe it was a Texas Dall ram. I was invited to go along for free, unless I got excited and decided to take one of the exotics. It was fun, but I had no interest in taking any of them. The ranch where we hunted was near Mason. It had no cattle. There were many car-sized boulders. The goats and sheep loved them. There were deer from all over the world. Two guides were with us. One carried a rifle in case I decided to go for some animal. We walked a lot but also rode in an old truck. I finally learned what the animal looked like James was hunting. Not very big or pretty, but nice curling horns. They opened a pasture and drove through it and I said, "James, there is a beauty!", and it was. "Take it!", but he didn't. I was in the cab and he was in the back of the truck. I thought, "What in the world is he looking for? That was a trophy for sure!" We drove out of the pasture and James quietly told me we were in the $1,500.00 pasture. Way beyond his budget. He found one more to his price range and they went off stalking it through the boulders. I stayed at the pickup watching and waiting. It wasn't long until two nice-looking rams like he was hunting came strolling down the road toward the truck. I stood still and they walked right by the truck some ten feet away from me, giving me no mind at all. In a little while I heard the shot, then another. In moments the guides came hauling the ram to the truck. The ones that had walked by me were nicer. The hunt was over. They cleaned and caped this little animal and we were on the road to Center Point. It just wasn't my kind of hunt. Neither was it for James. High Fence trophy hunting may be okay, but it has no appeal to me. By the way, if you want a cape buffalo and have the money they can fix you up. He looked pretty bored to me.
