We have two hummingbirds spending the winter at our feeders. One is a Rufous male. He does not yet have his full colors. This summer you may find him in Big Bend or New Mexico and farther west. The other hummer is a Buff-bellied. He is a much larger bird with a red bill. I have several tiny feeders out for them. Since they are both alone they have become best of friends and feed happily together....NOT! These two guys act as if there will never be any more nector, so they slug it out. The smaller one is more aggressive so controls the feeders most of the time. They are so selfish. I can excuse them, however. They have tiny brains.
On the other hand, I have known some humans with much larger brains who acted much like these two little hummers. I also know persons who are generous and thoughtful of others beyond belief. What makes the difference? I would like to think it is how important God is, and how valuable Christ's teachings are, along with those of the New Testament writers whose lives were touched by Christ. James, one of the apostles, wrote about faith in chapter two of the Book bearing his name. He illustrated faith in this way: "What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace,be warmed and filled.", but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." James 2:14-17.
