RECESSION

I read it in the paper so it must be so. We are in a recession. I am not real sure what that means, but it doesn't sound good. It's a shame they took a perfectly good word and added ion and made it a bad word.! I loved recess. In my grade school (which was also junior high and high school) we had a morning recess and an afternoon recess. When the bell would ring for recess we would head for the holes already dug and started a game of marbles. Our best shooter would be in our overall's pockets. There would also be another marble game taking place within a circle. You put some marbles in the middle of the circle and then shoot to knock them outside the circle.. You kept the ones you knocked out. A good shooter marble ) was the key. Big agates were the best! It had to be decided if you could do "knucks" (shoot from the knuckles of one hand....down into the ring) One day a kid showed up at recess to play. He had a nasty grin on his freckled face. He could hardly wait to ante up his marbles for the middle of the circle. When his turn came to shoot he took out the biggest steel ball we had ever seen. It must have come from an airplane wheel! He grinned devilishly and smacked that steelie ball into the marbles. They scattered everywhere! Three or four shots and he had cleaned the ring. We wanted to check the rules but there weren't none! We had been caught in the wheels of progress. After that, everyone was after steelie balls. Great big ones. Some guys would give a bull-durham sack full of marbles for one steelie. I never got to own one. I have one now. Marbles, anyone?
