FOR WANT OF A NAIL

This is an ancient nursery rhyme going back to the 1300's in England:

For want of a nail the shoe was lost
For want of a shoe the horse was lost
For want of a horse the rider was lost
For want of a rider the battle was lost
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

I could not think of all the words of this ancient nursery rhyme last night but it kept coming back to me and so I looked it up and share it with you. I have added a line or two

For want of a free throw the championship was lost
For want of the championship the title was lost
For want of the title..... well, maybe next year!
Two really great and powerful teams played for the NCAA championship when Kansas and Memphis met Monday night in the Alamodome in San Antonio. Memphis almost casually laughed at their lack of ability on the free throw line. They had destroyed other teams all year. Only one loss! Who needs free throws? Turns out they did. The game was literally lost in the last moments because Memphis could not make the simplest of shots. Our second grade grand-daughter can make free throws! I know the game went to overtime but Memphis didn't show up for the overtime. Their free-throw flubs defeated them.

Little details can be very important. Checking the oil and tires before a trip. Checking the date on that meat bought at the store. Picking up a child's toy that someone could trip over. Practicing free throws along with slam-dunks and three-point shots.
"And all for the want of a free throw missed..."
