I used to read comic books as a boy. I traded with other guys. I bought some myself for a dime. Comic books then were before TV so it was an adventure to read them. I also liked Big-Little books. Know what they were? There are times for comic books and times to move beyond them.
Just a few years ago I went to the Corpus-Christi library for some sermon research. The library is fairly close to where some homeless men hang out. While I was in the library I was amazed at the information they had available. Not just books,but valuable information about jobs of all kinds and educational opportunities. As I left the library, on the steps outside, was a man who had the appearance of a homeless/jobless person. He was sitting on the steps. He was a young man. He was reading a beat-up comic book! I immediately recalled all the job and educational information I had just seen less that 100 feet from this man who could use that info and improve his station and happiness in life. He chose to sit on the steps of a place with a wealth of knowledge and read a comic book. It was a tragic and heart-breaking sight. So near to help and yet so far. It is true in other areas involving much more than being jobless or homeless. In the spiritual area of life persons by the hundreds and thousands pass by our churches offering peace and joy and salvation through Jesus Christ, but they move on, living out their comic book lives when the knowledge of eternal life is so close. I should have said something to that young man that morning. I didn't. We should say something to those going by our church buildings living their comic-book existence but we ...........
