My friend, Bill Smith, went to be with the Lord yesterday. It was a blessed relief for him and for his family. He was a dear friend to so many. He loved the Lord and he loved people. I first met Bill at the wedding reception he and Phyllis had at their home. I kidded Phyllis about going to a motel on their honeymoon and having them registered as Mr. and Mrs. Bill Smith. I imagine Bill had a lot of good-natured kidding. He and I and Ray Simmons played golf together when we were a bit younger and able. We often walked. We played eighteen holes. We would start early to finish before the heat got too much. You really can get to know a person playing golf with him. Bill was a great golfer. He started playing late in life. Had he started earlier and given it all his time he surely could have played on the tour. He played easy and under control. His putts were true and to the hole. His temperment was calm.. His compliments to others were generous. He did not try to coach. He was a wonderful playing partner. Bill was all of those things on and off the golf course. He will be missed by me and by many. I thank God I had the privilege of knowing Bill Smith. He was a Christian gentleman.
