Brown bird, looking in my house,
you'll find the hole there narrow.
I've done that quite on purpose,
I want no pesky sparrow.
You squeezed somehow right in!
The home of mother wren.
My feelings, cold and narrow,
Make me not want a sparrow.
I peeked inside the house
to see what I might see.
It came as no surprise,
Three mouths gaped back at me.
Claiming to love birds,
I've listed quite a few,
Not caring for the sparrow,
What am I to do?
Mercifully, I let them live
They joined the other "pests"
Who scatter seed and drive "good" birds
From our yard and nests.
Birds can teach us many things
If we'll watch and see.
There is a place for sparrow-folks,
To live in the same tree...with me.
