BAPTISM

A few weeks ago we attended the baptism of our daughter-in-law at Fellowship of The Parks, a growing young adult oriented church in Fort Worth. It was wonderful to see the place pulsing with young couples and children. The music was contemporary and the style of presentation was that of a new era, but the message was Biblical and I am excited seeing church being vital to a new age-level of adults. The baptistry was a portable one that could be rolled in and out. They have built a lovely one outside but it wasn't quite ready for use. I recalled my own baptism at the age of nine. It took place in a muddy pond the cows drank from. Charles Fake, the pastor for many years in Rockport has baptized in the bay. A few years back I baptized three young people and an adult in Chatham Lake near Denver. We could see the Columbine High School from this lake shore. The water was really cold, but it was a great experience. Jesus began it all with his own baptism in the Jordan River before it flows down to the Dead Sea. River, baptistry, lake, bay. It doesn't matter. Where there is water and a person following Christ there can be baptism. The Apostle Paul wasted no time the night that Philippian jailer and his family were converted. Listen to this: "And they spoke unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his family straightway. And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house." Acts 16:32-34. What a changed man and gracious host! He washed the stripes Paul and Silas had received. He had them preach to his family. They had a baptism, and then he fed them with meat! Conversion brings changes like this. Baptism symbolizes a person be resurrected to a new life in Christ. I pray that it has happened to you in a meaningful, Biblical way.
