I remember the summer of thirty-seven,
playing with a friend who had a toy pick.
He missed the dirt but buried it in my skull.
Blood and water; iodine and tears.
A family didn't rush off to ER back then.
I remember December of forty-one.
Our teacher brought a radio to school.
We listened to FDR, our president.
He spoke of a "day that will live in infamy".
I remember April of forty-five.
My Western Flyer was loaded with extras.
I rode the city streets of Fort Smith
yelling, "Extra! Extra! President dead!".
Bad news, but good money for a newsboy.
I remember December of fifty-seven.
The most beautiful girl stood next to me.
We vowed to love till death do us part.
We have and still do.
I remember a lot of people and places.
So much laughter and many tears.
Some great moments, and crushing defeats,
but I remember. Each memory cherished.
To remember is now a special gift
I pray will last until my dying day.
There is no promise it will or won't,
But today.....today I remember.
