"The Perfect Storm" is the name of a book by Sebastian Junger about a true event which happened along the East Coast in 1991. The storm hit some commercial fishermen in late October/early November. It was made into a movie in 2000. I have not read the book or seen the movie.
Just as we were preparing to leave Rockport last week a slick brochure arrived in the mail from an auto dealership in a nearby city. It had to have been made up days earlier before any storm. The brochure said: "It's Coming. It's Almost Here! It's The Perfect Storm! It showed the gulf and that city. The sweep of the storm in the brochure was on a direct hit on that city. The irony of it was that the storm at that particular time WAS aimed directly at that city! The "storm" was about the great values they were offering that weekend. Guess what? Most of the folks there were evacuated by that week-end. Instead of "The Perfect Storm" it was "The Perfect Dud!".
You know, advertisers can and do take great liberties. They have very few controls today. One thing they better not mess with too much is "Mother Nature". Let's carry this a little bit to an extreme: "The Perfect Tsunami". "The Perfect Tornado" "The Perfect Flood" "The Perfect Drought" "The Perfect Earthquake" and on we could go. These often-tragic events and "perfect" simply do not go together. There is ONE statement to be made: "The Perfect God". He has a guiding Hand on it all. We have no idea of His short-term or long-term plans in natural events. We simply trust in Faith.
I do think it would be appropriate to say of the slick ads guys who composed that bit of stuff for the big sale.... "The Perfect Goof!"
