OCTOBER

We made it! It is October! It is the TENTH month of the year and has thirty-one days. October comes from the Greek, OCTO meaning eight. It is often one of the most pleasant months weather-wise around the country. Leaves begin to fall. Football permeates the air. Nights are cool or even cold. Hunters begin to fill feeders and look for signs of animal traffic in their area.
Some special days are: Columbus Day - second Monday; Apple Day - 21st; U.N. Day - 24th; Navy Day - 27th; Halloween - 31st. It is the month of baseball playoffs and the world series. It is Red October for Russia when the 1917 Revolution began and Communism reared it's ugly face. It may be your birthday month. Happy Birthday

Welcome! FRESH, exciting October!
Congress has made it at first quite sober.
The Astros year is finally over.
Gophers and moles have eaten my clover.

Days get shorter and the time will change,
and that for me is really quite strange.
Why are we fooling with times that once worked?
also, why is coffee no longer perked?

I lay Sunday night where a country sky
allowed me to see with the naked eye
stars without number spark-ling free,
as no man-made light could we even see.

Those stars were the same in that clear night air
as David saw when he lay out there
watching the sheep and talking to God
and napping a bit on the hillside sod.

We can change the time and the ways of man.
Some try to change God...or think they can,
but, with all their talk no matter how clever,
He's the same...yesterday...today....forever!
