We really got pounded by 2008. Personal fortunes tumbled. Huge businesses took a hit. The entire world is shaken by economic turmoil. And it always reads worse than it really is! So we get caught up in all that.
A devastating hurricane targeted Texas. It didn't miss. The damage was in billions of dollars, along with lost homes, cars, school time, belongings, and lives. Just days ago I saw fine homes still with tarps over untouched roofs. Many more had no roofs to patch...no roofs at all!
Political campaigns invaded us, spending many more millions of dollars to get elected...or lose. We were bound to have a new president, but to have one from a different ethnic setting is quite a shock for many. You and I who are older KNOW no single person, whatever the party or race, can solve the great issues of our day. Each of us have to be responsible and accountable.
In sports America's Team voted almost unanimously not to be that any more. Led by their owner they became a team of egotists and playboys instead of Cowboys. They sure lost me, a long-time loyal fan of the Landry days.
In religion most everything is being served up today. Like a popular ice cream there are many flavors. It is true the church needs to stay in touch with the times. We don't have to wear it's clothes or drink from it's cup.
In family it is never easy. Our kids and grandkids face issues and challenges of immense proportions. They make mistakes and take some hard knocks, but when their hearts and motivations are right they will overcome.
To one who has finally accepted I am old, and grateful to be there, each day is a special blessing and challenge. Things of importance have changed, or what we once thought was so important. Quiet moments are valued. A cup of coffee in the early morning. A day without a doctor's visit. A cold norther blowing in. Rain! Lots of it! Pulling some grass from a flower bed. Reading a card from a long-forgotten friend. Talking with God and knowing He hears every word. These things are important.
It is soon to be 2009. Enjoy each day. Simply say: "This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it."
