Motorcycles

Motorcycles have always had a certain attraction to a lot of boys and men. Today there are some great machines. Harley Davidson is probably the best known around the world.

My brother-in-law,Herschel Garner, lives in Rison, Arkansas. He is a retired Federal Marshal. He is planning to come here this week with a friend to spend a day at the gospel music fest. They are coming on their MOTORCYCLES! Hershel is living out a dream. My sister probably forbid it while she was alive, just as my mother did for me. My dad as a young man had an Indian cycle. That was around 1920. I never had a motorcycle. I didn't really want one that bad...except when I was in High School I really wanted a James Cycle. It was a quiet little machine from England. My friend, Larry Lau had one. I rode behind him a lot of times, but never got to drive one. I have looked for James Cycles since those days but never saw one again. Just found out why. The company went under in 1966.

I also wanted a Cushman scooter. It was a paper boy's dream, or so I thought. Never had one of those either. One year in Idaho we saw a man and wife at a restaurant one morning. They were riding a beautiful customized Harley with a sidecar. This vehicles cost in excess of $30,000, and that was years ago. I was bragging on it and finally the man said: "Do you want to take a spin in the sidecar?". Moments later I was riding down the Main Street of Salmon, Idaho, with a total stranger. It was a great ride and I would do it again.

Ann and I were in the vicinity of Sturgis, South Dakota, late one summer. It was at the time of the famous Sturgis motorcycle rally. There were about 250,000 cyclists there. We saw them everywhere. All kinds. The ones we met were decent folks. Maybe if I am real nice Hershel will let me......... forget it!
