TIMAEUS

It is interesting to study names in the Bible. We cannot help but ask the question from time to time,"Why is he or she mentioned in the Bible?". Surely there is a purpose for each name, even when there is little or no information about the person.

One such mystery is a man with the name Timaeus. He is mentioned in Mark 10:46. "Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (that is, the son of Timaeus), was sitting by the roadside begging." We certainly know the story of Bartimaeus. Some even know the gospel song with these words in the first verse: "One sat alone beside the highway begging. His eyes were blind, the light he could not see. He clutched his rags and shivered in the shadows....then Jesus came...and bid his darkness flee." "Then Jesus Came". But why did the writer of Mark's gospel mention the name of his father? Well, that is your Bible question of the week. No one really knows the answer, so your answer can't be said "wrong" by someone. No fair springing that on your Sunday School teacher, or Pastor, Sunday morning. But think about it. Why was a blind beggar singled out as the son of a man with almost the same name? Good luck!
