Sunday is the birthday of our first president. It would be good for everyone to read his farewell address. He was not running for an office. He was never very political. He was leaving with no intention to return. I was shocked to see how little attention is given today to this man's sound advice in matters of foreign policy, war, taxes, and religion. Here is a statement he made on the matter of religion. You can pull up the entire address and read it, as I did. It is brilliant in it's wisdom and foresight.
OF ALL THE DISPOSITIONS AND HABITS WHICH LEAD TO POLITICAL PROSPERITY, RELIGION AND MORALITY ARE INDISPENSABLE SUPPORTS. IN VAIN WOULD THAT MAN CLAIM THE TRIBUTE OF PATRIOTISM WHO SHOULD LABOR TO SUBVERT THESE GREAT PILLARS OF HUMAN HAPPINESS, THESE FIRMEST PROPS OF THE DUTIES OF MEN AND CITIZENS. THE MERE POLITICIAN, EQUALLY WITH THE PIOUS MAN, OUGHT TO RESPECT AND TO CHERISH THEM........LET US WITH CAUTION INDULGE THE SUPPOSITION THAT MORALITY CAN BE MAINTAINED WITHOUT RELIGION.....REASON AND EXPERIENCE BOTH FORBID US TO EXPECT THAT NATIONAL MORALITY CAN PREVAIL IN EXCLUSION OF RELIGIOUS PRINCIPLE.
We've come a long way, Baby. And Baby, we've got a long way to go...to get back to these great principles from the Father of Our Country.
