Sunday mornings I attend a Bible Study service at one of our nursing homes. It is well-attended by folks there. Many of them come in wheel-chairs. Others are assisted with walkers. We sing old hymns some of them know. A brief Bible study is given and there is a prayer time. It is meaningful to me as I attend.
At the service Sunday a man sat next to me who walked in on his own. He appears to be in good shape and his mind is sharp. He will be ninety his next birthday. It is sometimes difficult to begin a conversation. A lot of opening statements are not appropriate. I didn't like the one that came to mind but I used it anyway. I said to the gentleman, "How was your week?". He smiled and answered, "Compared to what?". That was a great answer, although it was a question. I thought how that response can fit so many settings for us, especially we who are in our senior years. "Compared to what?" It makes a big difference what the comparison is! "How is your health?"." What do you think of this place?" "How was your meal?" "How do you like your new car?" "How was the movie?" "How was school today?" ........ don't we really decide many of our answers on some kind of comparative basis? I think "Compared to who or whom?" might also fit. I wish I had had that little quip many years ago. I didn't. How do you like my blogs?
