It is a rather "blah" month for me. I am thankful there are only twenty-eight days. Leap year every four years makes it with twenty-nine. In ages past February has been as brief as twenty-three days. Leap year was skipped when it's turn came in 1900. It will happen again in 2100! I will most likely miss that exciting year. February was the LAST month until 450 BC. It seems the people who figure such things have had a difficult time with February. So do I.
February was called Solmonath by the Anglo Saxons. It meant "mud month". We wouldn't mind calling it mud month this year here in South Texas! The Finnish called the month Helmikuu, which meant "month of the pearl". Snow would melt on the trees. It would then refreeze. The droplets had the appearance of pearls of ice. Again, inappropriate for where we live.
Special days in February are Valentines Day, Presidents Day, and Ground Hog Day. Football is quieted. baseball hasn't begun, basketball is not yet to March Madness. Grass is dormant and trees are devoid of leaves. Winds blow fishermen out of the water. It is NOT a favorite month of mine.
The flowers for February are the violet and primrose. The birthstone is amethyst. Amethyst is a pinkish violet to grape quartz. Wearing the amethyst is supposed to make the wearer gentle and amiable. It's powers include dreams, healing, peace, love, courage, and happiness. If you buy into that I have some seashore property to sell you in Cotulla.
Amethyst is found in many countries of the world. It is often in geodes. You will see geodes cut in half in rock stores. Brazil is a big producer along with S. Korea, Austria, India, and Zambia. Texas has some amethyst. Most of it is not a fine grade that would make beautiful jewelry. There is an amethyst hill not far from Fredericksburg, Texas. It is on a private ranch so don't plan to go mining.
There is one really good thing about February it is almost one-third over and I have just turned the calendar! Have a nice February!. (Don't leave out the first r. It is silent in Texas.)
