There have been quite a few presidents since this country's birth. Some you can name quickly.Others might cause you to ask, "Was he a president?". A former president who might fit that category was Millard Fillmore.
Fillmore was vice-president when Zachary Taylor died in office in 1850. He became the thirteenth president. His first act was seeking a new carriage. "Old Edward" Moran, a White House attendant, found a beautiful carriage being sold, for the owner was leaving town. Fillmore, after looking at the carriage, asked Old Edward, "But how would it look for the President of The United States to ride around in a second-hand carriage?". The gutsy old attendant answered, "Your Ixcellancy is only a sicond-hand President." The old man hit close to home. In Fillmore's three years of service his greatest achievement, he said, was putting a bathtub in the White House. In 1852 the Whigs chose not to select him as their presidential candidate. Some of his friends decided to run him in a new party called Know Nothing Party. He was a prime candidate for such a party and lost by a wide margin. Such was the presidency of Millard Fillmore, 1850-1853. (This story comes from "Presidential Anecdotes" by Paul E Boller,Jr.)
Most have claimed, in recent years, to know-it-all. They discovered, one by one, they did not. We should be thankful we have some balance of powers. We have the legislative and judicial, as well as the executive. It is true even those powers can become biased, but there is still a balance of power, unlike the rule of a monarchy or dictatorship. The Bible simply calls on Christians to pray for all those in authority so that we might "lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence." That is a full-time job for any Believer. Whig or Bull Moose; Know Nothing or Democrat; Republican, Libertarian, or Whatever; presidents are only human. Some day in the future he will be a woman. To paraphrase Forrest Gump, "That's all I can say about that.".
