That's what the Southwest Airlines ad says. It isn't easy to get away from people these days.There are 305,753,264 in the United States. However, there are more since I retrieved that figure ten minutes ago. There is a birth every 7 seconds and a death every 12. The least populated country in the world is GREENLAND. Southwest doesn't fly there.
Still want to get away but stay in Texas? I have the place for you! It is Loving County. It is the least populated county in the country. There are 673 square miles. Since the county's population is now estimated at 71. That's a lot of space. Most of it is the Haley Ranch, I believe.
The only town is Mentone. You will find the Boot Track Cafe open in the mornings. There is a Post Office, Gas Station, and church building but no organized meetings. No water system. No Bank. No school. No newspaper. No cemetery. No lawyer.No Wal-Mart (yet). They do have a small court house. There is no jail but there is a sheriff. Sheriff Hopper won the last election by 51-38. If you are trying to balance that with the county population you have to add in all the folks who have moved away or folks who plan to move there.They can vote absentee.
So, it must be a quiet, peaceful place. Usually. Just a couple of years ago some schemers led by Lawrence Pendarvis of Florida attempted to "steal" the county. Pendarvis, it seems, operated a business of mail-order brides from the Philippines. The State of Florida was giving him a hard time. He decided to buy land in Loving County and move in enough people to take over the entire county. They would repeal all the laws and oppressive regulations such as gambling, incest, price gouging, drug handling, truancy, etc. . It was found they hadn't legally bought the land so they were run out of town. A WANTED poster went up declaring the men involved would be arrested if they ever came back. They haven't. Loving County, Texas, made the pages of a New York newspaper. Just what those folks didn't want and need.
