Did you wait to the last days? Hours? Minutes? Plan to drive to a Post Office and drop your tax return in the mail slot at 11:30? My kind of people! I did it for years. Because of our trip to the Hill Country I HAD to mail mine before I left. Killed my soul!
We are BACK from our birding/hunting safari to Leakey, Texas. Dr. Robert Edwards, Bobby Albin, our genial and talented host, and maker of coffees supreme; and self. Hunting, you say? At the very last minute Bobby told Robert to bring his rifle. He might have the chance to take an Axis deer. They have no season and are not regulated. They are delicious meat, much like beef. We really looked crazy heading out in the prime of birding season with a high powered rifle. Proper feed to lure the Axis had to be purchased. Tuesday evening Robert was in his position on a bluff overlooking the feeder. It filled with .... white-tailed deer! They are NOT open for hunting. Stiff fines can be given. He waited. It was after sunset and still no Axis...finally ONE appeared. It was NOT a doe he wanted to take for meat.( Or so he said) It was a magnificent BUCK. His antlers reached a yard or more into the sky. He stood among the white-tails and dared anyone to shoot. Things weren't going well. Finally, a safe shooting lane was seen and Robert became the proud owner of a trophy Axis deer on our birding trip! Somehow it just doesn't seem right! He has a box full of delicious meat, and a rack being mounted by Lee Bevly in Utopia. Lee is pastor there, and is also an accomplished taxidermist.
If you are invited to go birding with Robert Edwards make him leave his rifle at home. Those things can happen "Deep In The Heart Of Texas".(but not taxes)
