The Roadrunners from Rockport won the Roughwing Division of the Great Texas Birding Classic! Three birds separated us from second place, and six birds from third place! The kids received some nice prizes and had their picture taken with Kenn Kaufman, one of America's foremost conservationists. He is the field editor for Audubon magazine and columnist for several publications. His latest book is titled "Field Guide To Birds Of North America". Our team had received copies of his guide yesterday by an anonymous donor. He graciously signed their books today. It was an unexpected but exciting finish to weeks of hard work and birding by these kids. Let me mention their names: August Smith - 13; Savannah Rozacky - 10; Olivia Smith - 11; and Emily Duprie - 9.Gayle Rozacky was a key ingredient. She pushed this old man to do more than he had planned. It didn't hurt. The Roadrunners were sponsored by the Rockport Chamber of Commerce. The team saw eighty-eight birds of different kinds in eight hours. Quite a feat. They earned their title of "champs". Way to go, Roadrunners!!! The Roughwing Division was for kids up through age thirteen. This was our first year in this competition.
