Saturday morning at 6:00 AM the Roadrunners will gather at the Rozacky house, then head for Port Aransas. When we arrive there we will begin the clock giving us EIGHT HOURS to identify the most birds we can. The four members have to spot the bird and agree on its identity. I then have to agree or disagree with their call. These kids have been studying birds for months. We have had two practice runs. Now it is the BIG DAY. We will be competing with teams from all along the gulf coast. The ages are 8-13. An awards banquet will be held Sunday in Corpus. Team members are: Emily Duprie, August Smith, Olivia Smith, and Savannah Rozacky. We are in the Roughwings bracket. I think it will be loads of fun. Hope I can survive. I have seen two doctors in the last week and they both gave me good reports. We shall see.
How many birds can you identify? You might be surprised at how many....or how few. Texas has identified over the years more than 600 species within it's borders. Some have been seen very few times. Others are residents. Corpus Christi is the "birdiest" city in the country! Rockport is third. We hope that will help us. The wind has been howling and does not help the cause. Anyway, the Old Crow plans to be out there tomorrow watching these excited and talented kids.
