The football season begins, and not too soon. Our Astro Baseball team is dead in the water. It is too hot to fish or play golf. Bring on the PIGSKIN.
Our son-in-law, James Duprie, is now offensive co-ordinator at the historic old town of Goliad. Their first game is tomorrow night in Sinton. James' first coaching experience was in Sinton with their Junior High. They are the Goliad Tigers. They are in a tough district. Cuero, a perennial state power, is in that district. Palacios, Gonzales, Edna, and Yoakum make up the rest of the district. Goliad is just over an hour from our house. We like that a lot. Today Laura and James signed a contract with prospective buyers of their home in Nixon. We are hopeful it will all go through.
So, High School football will be our greater interest. University football comes next. The over-paid pros in billion dollar edifices are last. I was a member of one of the teams at the first football game I ever saw. Centerton played Hiwasee. No helmets. No pads. No stands. Every boy in Centerton school was on the team. Thank goodness, I never got in the game. That one game was our season. It was Junior High. It was 1945. We rode in the back of old pick-ups. This was Arkansas, folks. Today, less than ten miles from Centerton is headquarters for the largest business in the world. Wal-Mart.
