TIGER BY THE TAIL

If you follow golf you know it was an incredible performance. A golfer from South Korea named Y. E. Yang, ranked at that time 110 in the world, grabbed a Tiger by the tail and pulled the biggest upset seen in years. Immediately people began to say Tiger choked. Not so. He didn't play his greatest and make those putts he is known for, but let's give credit where it is due. This thirty-seven year old "unknown" played the game of his life, leaving not only Tiger in his trail, but Mickelson, Furyk, Toms, etc. Yang started the tournament FIVE OVER PAR. He got his game together and shot thirteen UNDER the final forty-nine holes. The championship was open to the final hole. Yang made an incredible shot that gave him a birdie and put the great Tiger Woods away for the day.

What I enjoyed the most was when Yang, in the heat of battle, tossed a golf ball to a fan after he had played it well on a crucial hole. I had never seen that in a really big match. He made that man who caught it quite wealthy! I cannot imagine the going price for that ball in South Korea today. I liked it when Yang bent down and waved in the camera following him. He said later he was working hard to maintain calm. Tiger only stalks and glares down the course. He demands of himself perfection." Nobody's perfect!" I would say to Tiger, if coaching him: "Loosen up a bit. Enjoy the game and the fans who have helped make you incredibly wealthy. Try PLAYING some golf instead of working at it so hard. Remember earlier times how much fun it was when you came down the fairway to the shouts of your fans. Yang has something to teach you; not so much about golf, but about life." A word from a wise man: "There was a man all alone. He had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. For whom am I toiling? he asked, and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment? This too is meaningless...a miserable business." (Ecc 4:8)
