Life - And The Three Bears

In that kid story we are familiar with from our own childhood's remembrances, Goldilocks had a hard time getting everything just right. It was either too hot or cold; to big or too little. When she finally got it all right life was interrupted by the BEARS!

We are captured by a dilemma here in Rockport. No rain and terrible drought. Our best answer is a tropical storm far enough away so we don't get too much rain. It is not our best answer to have a direct-hit hurricane that might blow our house down. (O that's another story). We could use about ten inches of rain, but not all from the same cloud. No, some people at the lakes would like more. And ON it goes.... see why God didn't put us in charge?

The same carries over to churches. Some want pews and others folding chairs. Some want big buildings and others small. Some want the service loud and lively. Others prefer quieter settings. Some want "feel good" sermons and others prefer to hear about how bad we are. Some want things like they have been. Others want change.

Aren't we glad God didn't put us in charge? He gave assignments. He tells us when to board up the windows. He warns us about the storm that will destroy us if we let it. He gives a great deal of freedom..... but in it all... He calls for us to follow Him.

When we lived in Taft we discovered the most powerful man in a time of storm was the Mayor. He was in command. He could call evacuation. He could name those to stay behind. Our dear friend, Herb Grebe, came by and told Ann she would need to remain as one of these storms bore down on South Texas. As a nurse she might be needed in an emergency. I asked Herb what MY JOB would be. I expected something exciting with flashing lights and sirens. He said, "Reverend, I am putting you in charge of the morgue. It will be at the gymnasium!". The morgue!!! That was the last job I wanted! That was my assignment?? That storm veered away and Taft was spared. I didn't have to operate a make-shift morgue. What is God's assignment for you at this point in time. Could you handle a job at the morgue if he gave it to you? Keep your eyes on the skies.
