Rain! Wonderful. wet, wiggly, washy, rain! It began about five thirty and continues now. More is promised. I think I saw my grapefruit tree smiling. I know we are.
We are funny folks, aren't we? I can remember times when we said, "When is all this rain going to stop? It has rained for weeks! We're getting 'cabin fever'. Please Lord, just a little sunshine!". It's just hard for us to be perfectly content with the circumstances. That is true in business, at work, in family, and even in our churches, and personal lives.
Being content is a learning process. Some are slow learners. Others never learn. The great Apostle Paul was a learner. Listen to what he had to say about the matter. " I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well-fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength." (Philippians 4: 11-13)
Did Paul share his secret? I think he did. It is in that last sentence. Contentment comes through Him. He gives us the strength we need to face any and all circumstances..
Today Ann and I are on Tamiflu. We were exposed to the Swine Flu this last week-end. Our son, Lee, is down with it right now. Tamiflu is no guarantee we won't get it, but it could ease the impact if it hits us. In the meantime we are going on with a busy week.
This old gospel song as been ringing in my ears this morning: "Showers of blessing. Showers of blessing we need. Mercy drops round us are falling. But for the showers we plead." That isn't about rain we are seeing fall right now. It is much deeper than that. We desperately need those showers to come.
