This morning I rode the school bus all over Rockport. I never rode a school bus as a boy. Our school didn't have any. We lived too close anyway. I remember at Centerton, Arkansas riding a "former" school bus to church. It was painted blue. You kept the windows open, even in winter, because the exhaust had a way of coming in under the dash. We were never troubled with mosquitoes as we were today. That was seventh grade.
Today I was a TOUR GUIDE! I sat at that hallowed place in front of the bus, with a mike. It is a powerful feeling. I lectured them about Rockport and Humming Birds and whatever I wished. They even felt my expertise enough to ask questions. One asked, "What is the favorite flower of the hummingbird?"......uh..... "Perhaps we should save that question for the gentleman banding birds. We will be there in a few moments." (Good move!) At the banding station as Charlie Brower held one of these tiny jewels in his hand, I heard a familiar voice. "What is the favorite flower of the humming bird??" (She doesn't give up easily) Charlie lifted the tiny bird to his ear and waited a moment. Then he said: "She said she likes most all of them!". Why didn't I think of that? Anyway I did two tours with groups of 42 and 45. There was a sprinkling of applause at the end, probably indicating they were glad to be close to restrooms again.
Later today we head for Goliad for the Varsity game with Luling. The 0-3 Tigers really need a win tonight. Last night we enjoyed the antics of Dempsey Durprie as he made three solo tackles, caused a fumble and recovered the ball. He also ran the ball four times and his team won 14-0. Now that was FUN!
Hope you have a great week-end.
