....and with the end of this day they are gone for 2009! Here in South Texas it is the month of hurricanes, based on past histories. Not one has even caused us to think much about it. No one is minding a respite from what has been happening in recent years.
With the passing of September and entrance of Fall on the scene there comes renewed interest in being outside and enjoying the handiworks of God. Folks in Colorado and the West have already seen snowfalls and fresh caps of snow on mountain peaks. Soon people in the Midwest and East will see the turning of leaves into autumn colors. Pumpkins are making their annual appearances in grocery stores. Hunters are putting up blinds, or clearing them of owls and bees and wasps to prepare for a season only weeks away. Football takes over the spotlight, and gyms begin to echo with the sound of dribbling basketballs. Girls sprawl and fall as they dive for volleyballs, or leap high to slam one across the net. At church the choirs begin to prepare Christmas programs as others think about helping soldiers far away remember the season.
Fall is a wonderful season God has given us...but it is not without some difficulty. A flu virus is raging about the country and world, threatening to make millions sick and many die. We await a vaccine but do not know if or how much it might help. There are still deep economic and job concerns. Some of them are quite severe. People intent on killing and maiming us are about in our own land. There have been some narrow escapes, but others replace the ones caught. We must be on guard for these true terrorists.
God speaks a word through the Psalmist: "My eyes will be on the faithful in the land, that they may dwell with me. He whose walk is blameless will minister to me." Our job is clear.... be faithful and blameless in our walk.
