The Bible sets apart a single man, of all those who searched for animals for food with spear and sword, bow and arrow. His name was Nimrod. Genesis 10:8 gives the brief account: " Cush was the father of Nimrod who grew to be a mighty warrior on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord, that is why it is said, "Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord" "He is mentioned again in Chronicles and called "a mighty warrior".
Nimrod would laugh, if around today, at the "mighty hunters" of century 21. We go out in high-powered trucks with high-powered rifles and sophisticated equipment. We construct little houses and put out feed for the animals we seek. We have scopes that allow us to count the ticks on their back. We reel them up into trees for dressing, or simply haul them off for someone else to do it. We then go to our electrified accomodations and eat in style, perhaps even watching TV or a movie. We call home on our cell phones and tell of the hunt. That is the mighty hunter of today. Personally, I don't mind too much.
I am heading out this morning to Richland Springs to begin my annual rite of hunting. The appeal of such a venture at this point in time is to simply experience a little bit of nature and fellowship with nimrods of this day and time. To enjoy an open fire after dark, with a cup of coffee and some home-made chili makes it all worthwhile. Dangers come, not from being gored or attacked by a mountain lion, but of falling out of some stand, or wrecking a four-wheeler! ( I hear Nimrod laughing)
So, dear reader, the Lord willing, I will join you again on November 16. Hunting that long? Not hardly. Mrs. Nimrod has tacked on a trip to Dallas and the relatives thing. That is where the dangers lie. Take care, and don't forget to come back. I'll try to do the same.
