Today (Saturday) begins the Twelfth Annual "Babes On The Bay" contest here in Rockport, Texas. Our little coastal town has been invaded by more than a THOUSAND WOMEN, each totin' a rod! Their aim is good. For the next two days the poor redfish, trout, drum, and hardheads won't have a chance. Over three-hundred teams of fisherwomen will be after fish, so " stand back, men, and give them room."
This is the largest open women's fishing tournament in the world! The only participating men are guides and observers. You should see the boats! They are everywhere. We are talking serious boats, not 14' aluminum with a 9.5 motor, but 22' jobs with 200 hp. These are serious ladies, here to have fun and to win. There are prizes for most everything they can catch, except a husband. Some of them would throw it back if they hooked one.
Ann and I drove downtown yesterday evening and saw the giant tents in place, and all the boats and pick-ups towing them. They were having an initial meeting to greet and talk about the rules, etc. Saturday morning at the break of day they will head in all directions on the bays to wade, troll,or anchor and catch fish! It looks like a near-perfect fishing day. A good day for you men to stay clear of the babes. If they hook one of you it won't be pleasant.
